Gezer09 Lift The Men’s Fastpitch 2021 Title After A Great Comeback Victory Over Phoenix
Wednesday’s game against Gezer09 was a heartbreaker for Phoenix, as they lost the lead late in a 10-8 defeat. With the win, Gezer09 completed a 2:0 series sweep over Phoenix lifting their first Men’s Fastpitch title since 2016. The 16 year old Assaf Raphaeli won the MVP award after driving in the winning runs in Game 1 and 2 of the series
Brian Aron’s unit captured the lead in the second inning. Roye Shelem singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. The hosts added four runs in the third inning with a rally led by a single by Raanan Goldberg and an error on a ball put in play by Yonatan Aron.
Gezer09 immediately answered scoring four runs in the fourth inning. The offensive firepower was led by the core veterans Benny Ruggill, Yoav Eliyahu, and Aviv Yaakov, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. In the top of the fifth the comeback was complete after Gil Siegel drove a ball to the gap in right center driving in Alberto Daniel Scioscia and finishing at third as right after him, Gilad Lazar hit a line drive single to bring in the veteran catcher giving Gezer09 a 8:7 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Phoenix tied things up at eight. Alon Paz hit an inside the park solo homer. Goose Gillett’s squad grabbed the lead for good in the top of the seventh when Assaf Raphaeli doubled to the left center field gap on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.
Michael Marunov was the winning pitcher for Gezer09. The righty allowed 11 hits and eight runs over seven innings, striking out ten and walking one. Seth Ross took the loss for Phoenix. Ross allowed nine hits and ten runs over seven innings, striking out four.
